16 Little Worlds

I don’t know what you call this sort of thing. Windows? Tiny pix? To me it feels sort of related to zentangle but it’s obviously different.

I just had this piece of paper that I had folded into thirty-seconds trying to explain something to somebody, and it was sitting on the table next to a golf pencil I had for some reason, and I started to fill in the boxes. I was going to do the other side but it looked like someone had spilled coffee on it, which is weird because I don’t drink coffee.

Anyway a little thing. I’ve been working on a big thing I may share here next week even though it’s not *exactly* mine. I’ll explain later. Or not.

The windows are (left to right, then top to bottom):

  1. The Sonoran Desert
  2. Tropical Island with Hammock
  3. Wetlands
  4. Pine Forest
  5. Flowery Meadow
  6. Rainbow Field
  7. Tree with Garden Swing
  8. The Seashore
  9. Under the Sea
  10. Lush Bike Path
  11. Small Boat on Stormy Ocean
  12. Mountains
  13. Thunderbird
  14. Mushroom Undergrowth
  15. Butterfly Meadow
  16. Turtle

Folksy Switchplates

I’m an adult and this is my house.

Somewhat randomly, I decided to decorate some of my switchplates using these Artiqo Paint Pens The Man gave me a couple years back. Apparently, I hadn’t even opened the box yet because they were all still shrink wrapped. I really liked this product, which was easy to use and dried fast. My only complaint is that both the light green and dark green pens had a watery consistency. I suspect something about the green pigment degraded the paint. They were still usable but the color is not as smooth or bold.

The big zentangle one is the switch by the front door when you come in. The fish are for the bathroom (that glow-in-the-dark star was already stuck on there as part of a larger decorative scheme) and the rainbow mandala is for the bedroom. I was intentionally going for this imperfect folk art look so I wouldn’t get angry at myself when they didn’t come out perfect.

Plastic switchplates are like 79 cents so if I don’t like them I can just replace them. But I think I like them. I have 4 more switchplates I could decorate. I’m really thinking about painting giant mandalas on the walls—a big complex one in the living room and the sacred geometry chakra chart one in the bedroom—and this fits that aesthetic. Painting is just a whole megillah and not my strong suit, but I think I’m moving in that direction. I always hated the paint job in this house but, again, painting is a whole megillah.

These pens might be dangerous. They write on pretty much everything. Who knows what I’ll draw on next?

Metal Zentangle 1

Going for the gold, and the silver, and the bronze.

At the same time I acquired 3 pounds of polymer clay, I also picked up another set of Sharpie Metallics to replace the defective ones I bought for October’s Black Cat Bulletin Board. These came from Michael’s, rather than Walgreen’s, and probably hadn’t been sitting on the shelf long enough to completely dry out. Then I got really excited to do a zentangle on black paper, so excited that I somehow failed to notice that this paper was substantially larger than 8 1/2 x 11 (i.e. somewhat larger than my flatbed scanner). So the edges of the design got cut off in the scan, but otherwise this one looks really nice.

Even though this piece was drawn yesterday, I’m still uploading it an hour late today because it’s hard to get back into a rhythm after a vacation, and also other reasons. Needless to say, I never got the chance to actually make anything today, except, of course, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. So now I’m behind on everything.

If you’re going to let a blog slide, December is the time to do it. No one has time to screw around online in December. In related news, my holiday sales are booming: 2 Tshirts and 2 stickers in 2 weeks. Success. Yeah. Please, buy my stuff so I can pay for all these art supplies.
